La production de l’espace

An application programmed to call public phone boxes randomly in a given area (for its first presentation this area was the Val d’Orge conurbation, in which the CAC Brétigny arts centre is based), one phone box at a time, each time an email is received on the work email addresses of the employees working at the venue in which the work is exhibited. If someone picks up, the application announces the phone box’s address and then reads the email. The content of the message remains unknown if nobody picks up. Speakers in the exhibition space play in real time the intermittent ringing, the message (if the phone is picked up) and any reactions from the person who picks up.

The application generates a spatial score in real time, each phone box serving both as somewhere from which sound is emitted and somewhere sound is listened to – an isolated place but at the same time a place that is part of an urban telecoms network.
