Le nombre du besoin

2019

Posters (120 x 80 cm), digital silk-screening printing, display protocol

Le nombre du besoin (The number of necessity) is a countdown. Each day, a new poster is presented. It presents the issues and the course of a strike that took place in the history of capitalism and whose duration corresponds to the number of days remaining in the exhibition where the piece is activated. For its first activation at the BBB art center in Toulouse in 2019, the exhibition lasts 106 days. Thus, on the evening of the opening, a poster is displayed relating a strike that lasted 106 days, the next day a poster on a strike that lasted 105 days, etc., until the last day of the exhibition, with a strike that lasted 1 day.

On this occasion, the posters are presented, one by one, outside on a signage pillar, Fût, devised by designer Dominique Mathieu. Each day, the new poster is pasted on top of the previous day’s.

The duo Huz & Bosshard provided the graphical conception for the posters, choosing a format, layout of the content, typography and colour scheme using the seven colours of the rainbow designed to facilitate the legibility of the texts from the street, at the same time as adopting certain conventions for the posting of posters in public spaces.
