Public holiday. With Silent Entertainment
Part of the Micro Silence exhibition (Galerie des Grands Bains Douches de la Plaine, Marseille, France, from 6 to 29 July 2017). A recording of the exhibition space was made between 3 pm and 7 pm on 25 June, on a Sunday, the day the space is closed. The recording was then played at that same time slot on each day of the exhibition, on the mobile phones and computers of people who work in the space, proposing the unobtrusive listening of a day off on a working day.
Silent Entertainment is a project by Patrice Caillet, Adam David and Matthieu Saladin, who present the dissemination of silence for all types of events. The silences are designed and created in situ, according to sites’ specific conditions. This project was initiated following the publication of their disc, Sounds of Silence – an anthology bringing together some of the most intriguing pieces of silence in recording history. Although all these pieces are composed with the same, singular material, they couldn’t in fact be any more diverse in terms of their considerations, such that they characterise the specificity of silences conceived and created for a reproducible medium, playing on its materiality and laying it bare.
